What's the easiest way to star in a Hollywood film? Yoostar, a sort of movie karaoke, allows people to act in their favorite movie - right in their own living room.

The next wave in technology, Yoostar has been recently released for movie fanatics who would like to star in a film and share it with their friends and family through sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

Edward C. Baig, author of the USA Today article "Yoostar Lets Anyone act Opposite Hepburn, Brando," states that Yoostar is “a portable movie studio like karaoke for the movies, featuring real actors and clips from actual movies.”

How Yoostar Works

This $170.00 system, while not yet available for Mac users, must be attached to a PC that contains at least a Pentium 4 class processor, with a preferred dual-core installed as well. The PC must also contain a state of the art graphics card in order to work properly.

“The system comes with a remote control, software, a fine USB webcam and stand (that resembles Wall-E), plus a 6- by 6-foot fold-away "green screen" you perform in front of, similar to those used in real studios,” stated Baig.

The green screen is representative of those used in the real movies or for others who perform in front of the camera, such as meteorologists. While the system comes with a nice selection of films to start with (for example Rocky and Animal House), more films can be purchased through Yoostar’s website.

Initial Problems with Yoostar

As most first editions tend to encounter, Yoostar does have some initial bugs that users may encounter. After testing the product, Baig discovered that instructions provided for the green screen were not exactly top notch, and a leg on the stand was not strong enough to withhold the green screen, as it snapped off.

On the software side of bugs, Yoostar is issuing “patches” to clean up some issues that may cause the PC to inadvertently crash.

The Benefits of Yoostar: Acting and Editing

Yoostar allows the average person to act alongside a favorite movie star. The script can be printed off ahead of time, so that the user can practice before videotaping. According to Bing, adlibbing is an exciting way to add a new twist to an old favorite film. Although the completed films are not allowed to be aired on YouTube, they can be shared on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, and they can be emailed as well.

Parents have no need to worry about deviant content suddenly becoming available for unexpecting eyes. According to Bing, an automatic filter screens for nudity and porn-style content. There is also a rating system that is applied to the films by an actual live editor.

While Yoostar does have its bugs, as does all breakthrough technology, the concept of starring and creating films is rather appealing to most video and reality users as a whole. Yoostar gives even the shiest of people a chance to try out their acting skills and be a star on film.
