There's been a lot of buzz over the Flip video camcorder range. These cameras look set to be one of the big Christmas gifts for gadget lovers & kids. What's the big deal?

Every year throws up a few surprise "must have" electronic items. Many of these go on to be big Christmas sellers. This year, for many kids and gadget enthusiasts, it looks like one of their main gizmo's of choice will be the Flip video camcorder. Small, but perfectly formed, this camera is attracting a lot of interest. So, why is it worth a look?

What Can a Flip do?

Flip cameras come in two models:

  • Flip Mino/Mino HD (2-8GB)
  • Flip Ultra/Ultra HD (2-8GB)

Marketed by the manufacturer as "the world's simplest HD camcorder", these cameras are incredibly easy to master and are held to give many of the advantages of larger models in a pocket-sized package. The HD versions, in particular, can produce some stunning results.

Using a Flip is a simple point and click manoevre which, together with its size and range of funky designs (some of which are customisable), is attracting a lot of interest from kids of all ages and many adults.

What is really turning them on, however, is the built-in FlipShare software that comes with every model.

What is FlipShare?

Each Flip camcorder comes pre-loaded with the company's flagship FlipShare software. Cameras can be slotted into a PC, MAC or laptop with minimum fuss via a USB arm that flips out of the camera. Taking videos may be fun but, for many, what they do with them now is what makes the Flip so exciting.

FlipShare comes with a range of functions. For example, it allows users to:

  • Store their videos on to their computer.
  • Edit and collate footage via a simple drag and drop system.
  • Create snapshots from videos.
  • Share videos with family and friends or load them instantly on to sites like YouTube and MySpace.
  • Watch videos on iPhones (via the FlipShare app).

Learning how to use FlipShare is easy, even for young kids, and the system is robust and feature rich enough to please older and more experienced video enthusiasts.

How to Buy Flip Cameras

With Flips gaining momentum in the playground and with boys who like toys it is likely that many people will think about buying these camcorders as Christmas presents. Whilst they don't come cheap, there are bargains to be found. Those interested in investing in a Flip may find that they find the best prices by shopping online or by using online price comparison sites. They may also be able to find discount codes or vouchers that could cut their costs a little more.
